The aquatic origins of the AERA D–1 Diver

The domed sapphire crystal emphasises the form, blending smoothly with the sloping matt ceramic bezel and the reverse pie-pan dial to create a striking piece of architecture on the wrist

In the 20th century, great leaps forward in technology brought previously uncharted territories within reach. Wristwatches quickly became vital safety tools. In the oceans, the invention of SCUBA (self-contained underwater breathing apparatus) gave divers unprecedented new freedom of movement to explore the depths. But it also brought new risks.

Dive watches developed quickly to address those risks. Unidirectional bezels (which could not rotate clockwise) were created to make it impossible for a diver to inadvertently knock the bezel during a dive to give a mistaken indication of more time available underwater. Tough cases and crystals, screw-in case backs and screw-down crowns were developed to withstand the water pressure of ever deeper dives. Finally, watch dials evolved into supremely legible displays with large light-emitting indexes that could be read even in low light.

‘For Aera, authenticity is everything, and our D–1 Diver most certainly owes something to the golden age of robust functional dive watches of the 1950s and 1960s.’

We didn’t want to create just another vintage-looking watch. Instead, our design had to look and feel like a contemporary statement. This meant stripping back the details to the essentials and creating a distilled, contemporary interpretation of the classic dive watch. The D–1 Diver has simplified, oversized markings with blue Swiss Super-LumiNova at night.

A closer look at the D–1 Diver

The ruggedly engineered 904L brushed stainless steel case and screw-in caseback are contemporary in feel, with a smooth elliptical profile that makes a bold statement and wears comfortably on the wrist.

For a sharp contrast to the matt velvet black with white matt markers of the dial, matt white hands provided the best reference and continued to provide a purity to the dial and hands design. The tip of the second hand features a luminous tip that adds a subtle colour accent that is also featured on other components.

Our insistence on Swiss quality and efficiency meant selecting the highest grades of luminous compound available to achieve colour and vibrance both day and night for all components with a luminous feature. Our dials feature special recesses which we hand fill with this LumiNova to make the very most of its superior glow.

Domed both sides to provide a clear view of the dished dial and reduce any optical distortions, the crystal is also coated with anti-reflective coating to reduce glare and is scratch resistant

Sellita SW200-1 has been in production since the early 2000’s, used by many well known Swiss brands for being a workhorse of the industry. The 38-hour power reserve movement has a 4Hz frequency which provides a smooth sweeping seconds hand. 26 jewels act as frictionless bearings to maintain the movement’s efficiency.

All straps benefit from a quick release system making it easy and convenient to change the feel and look of your watch.
